Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam – The Missile Man Who Taught India to Dream

In the small coastal town of Rameswaram, a young boy once cycled through the misty dawn, delivering newspapers before rushing to school. His hands were often stained with ink, but his mind was painted with dreams that reached beyond the stars. That boy was none other than Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam — the man who would later be known to the world as India’s Missile Man and the People’s President.

Born on 15 October 1931, Kalam’s life was a testament to how humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary destinies. Growing up in a modest household, he learned early the values of discipline, perseverance, and faith. His fascination with flight led him to pursue aeronautical engineering, and soon, he joined ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) — where he played a key role in developing India’s first satellite launch vehicle, SLV-III. Later, at DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), he became the guiding force behind India’s missile development program, earning him the title of Missile Man of India.

Yet, Dr. Kalam’s greatness went far beyond science. As the 11th President of India (2002–2007), he transformed the Rashtrapati Bhavan into a place of learning and inspiration. He reached out to millions of students, urging them to “Dream, dream, dream — dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action.” His words and actions lit a fire in the hearts of young Indians, encouraging them to believe that no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.

In 2025, his remarkable journey comes alive once again with the film ‘Kalam: The Missile Man of India’, starring Dhanush, unveiled at Cannes 2025. The film promises to rekindle his vision of a confident, creative, and compassionate India.

Dr. Kalam’s legacy is not confined to history books; it lives on in classrooms, laboratories, and every mind that dares to dream. On his birth anniversary, we salute the man who taught us that real power lies not in weapons or technology — but in wisdom, humility, and an unshakable belief in one’s dreams.

“If you want to shine like a sun, first burn like a sun.” — Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

His story continues to fuel a billion dreams, reminding us that from the lanes of Rameswaram to the skies of success, every step counts when walked with purpose.
